Set in the Edo period, the film opens with a group of women being convicted of various crimes. The rest of the film is given to graphic depiction of the tortures the women endure as part of their sentences.

Action in Slow Motion

 
In the very short film, which runs only 3 minutes, a completely nude woman is depicted frolicking in the surf. Then the film re-plays the same action in slow motion, from a different angle. It was an "art film" in the sense that this description was often used to dispute that the film was outright pornography. A card is displayed at the beginning that warns the viewer that the film is intended only for art students, and exhibition for other purposes could result in prosecution or jail time.

The only known print of this film was gifted to the British Film Institute, and is notable as an early depiction of full frontal female nudity in British cinema. The film has no production credits, so its author, and other information surrounding its production, are unknown.
 
Nel cortometraggio, che dura solo 3 minuti, viene raffigurata una donna completamente nuda che si diverte tra le onde. Poi il film ripropone la stessa azione al rallentatore, da un'angolazione diversa. Era un "film d'autore" nel senso che questa descrizione veniva spesso usata per contestare che il film fosse pura pornografia. All'inizio viene visualizzata una scheda che avverte lo spettatore che il film è destinato solo agli studenti d'arte e che la proiezione per altri scopi potrebbe comportare un'azione penale o il carcere. L'unica copia nota di questo film è stata donata al British Film Institute ed è degna di nota come una delle prime rappresentazioni di nudità femminile frontale nel cinema britannico. Séverine Serizy, a young and beautiful housewife, is unable to share physical intimacy with her husband, Dr. Pierre Serizy, despite their love for each other. Her sexual life is restricted to elaborate fantasies involving domination, sadomasochism, and bondage. Although frustrated by his wife's frigidity toward him, he respects her wishes.

While visiting a ski resort, they meet two friends, Henri Husson and Renée. Séverine does not like Husson's manner and the way he looks at her. Back in Paris, Séverine meets up with Renée and learns that a common friend, Henriette, now works at a brothel. At her home, Séverine receives roses from Husson and is unsettled by the gesture. At the tennis courts, she meets Husson and they discuss Henriette and houses of pleasure. Husson mentions a high-class brothel to Séverine at 11 Cité Jean de Saumur. He also confesses his desire for her, but Séverine rejects his advances.

Haunted by childhood memories, including one involving a man who appears to touch her inappropriately, Séverine goes to the high-class brothel, which is run by Madame Anaïs, who names her "Belle de Jour." That afternoon Séverine services her first client. Reluctant at first, she responds to the "firm hand" of Madame Anaïs and has sex with the stranger. After staying away for a week, Séverine returns to the brothel and begins working from two to five o'clock each day, returning to her unsuspecting husband in the evenings. One day, Husson comes to visit her at home, but Séverine refuses to see him. Still, she fantasizes about having sex with him in her husband's presence. At the same time, Séverine's physical relationship with her husband is improving and she begins having sex with him.

Séverine becomes involved with a young criminal, Marcel, who offers her the kind of thrills and excitement of her fantasies. One day, Husson visits the brothel and discovers Séverine, who asks him not to tell her husband about her secret life. He agrees and rejects her services, stating he is no longer attracted to her. Séverine decides to leave the brothel, with Madame Anaïs' blessing as she believes it is due to Marcel becoming increasingly jealous and demanding. After one of his associates follows Séverine to her home, Marcel visits her and threatens to reveal her secret to her husband. Séverine pleads with him to leave, which he does, referring to her husband as "the obstacle".

Marcel waits downstairs for Pierre to return home and shoots him three times. Marcel then flees but is shot dead by police. Séverine's husband survives but is left in a coma. The police are unable to find a motive for the attempted murder. Sometime later Séverine is at home taking care of Pierre, who is now paralysed, blind and in a wheelchair. Husson visits Pierre to tell him the truth about his wife's secret life; she does not try to stop him. After Husson leaves, Séverine returns to see Pierre crying. In an ambiguous ending which is hinted to be another of her fantasies, Pierre then gets out of the wheelchair, pours himself a drink and discusses holiday plans with Séverine.

Bella di giorno (Belle de jour) è un film del 1967 diretto da Luis Bunuel.

Il soggetto è tratto dal romanzo di Joseph Kessel del 1929, a proposito del quale lo stesso regista ebbe a dichiarare: «Il soggetto non mi piace per niente, l'ho accettato per riuscire a fare una cosa che mi piacesse da un'altra che non mi piaceva affatto». Georges Sadoul, in sintonia con il giudizio del regista, considera l'impresa riuscita: «Su un soggetto banale tratto da un brutto romanzo, Buñuel ha ricavato uno dei suoi film maggiori, saggio e distante, e che pure coinvolge lo spettatore grazie all'intuizione di un personaggio femminile che vive in uno stato di fantasticheria e insoddisfazione, prigioniera della propria infanzia, e che se ne libera solo quando la tragedia scatta e la "colpa" è "punita"». 

All'uscita fece scandalo per il pruriginoso tema trattato, ma fu considerato dalla critica come un prodotto d'alto valore, vincendo anche il Leone d'Oro alla 28ª Mostra internazionale d'arte cinematografica di Venezia nel 1967.

È a questo film, più che a Viridiana che «si deve la consacrazione di Buñuel al successo e alla notorietà (non a caso è stato dopo Belle de jour che la distribuzione ha "ripescato" opere come Nazarin, La joven e El angel exterminador».

Dall'edizione italiana, la censura tolse tre scene, tra cui il flashback su Séverine bambina che rifiuta di fare la Prima Comunione.

 Séverine, giovane moglie d'un medico ospedaliero, è affetta da seri problemi di relazione che la portano a vivere una vita affettiva distorta: fredda e distaccata col marito, cerca rifugio tutti i pomeriggi in una casa d'appuntamenti nella Parigi degli anni sessanta, dove cerca, prostituendosi, una sorta di psicanalisi che la porti a uscire dalle sue fobie e dalla sua frigidità.

Alva receives news from her long-lost husband, Russell, and goes to Africa in search of him. There, she finds that her husband is being "held prisoner" by a naked native princess, called Loma. Now, in order to bring Russell back home, Alva must show that she's better than the princess.

The Bite

 





A gigolo is paid by a rich older woman to seduce young girls while she and friends watch his love-making behind a two-way mirror. He tries to break free of the older woman's control, but when his sick mother needs an operation, he returns to the rich woman, making love to her for money. Humiliated by his dependency, he takes the woman's daughter to the love-show, where he rapes her in front of her mother.

Un gigolò viene pagato da una ricca donna anziana per sedurre delle giovani ragazze mentre lei e le sue amiche lo guardano mentre fa l'amore dietro uno specchio a due vie.
